Prunus Lusitanica x 5 Portuguese Laurel Plants Potted
Prunus Lusitanica or more commonly known as Portuguese Laurel is a very easy bushy dense evergreen shrub (excellent for hedging) to growThe leaf is a much smaller and darker green than the standard laurel and the stems are rich red. Its an excellent plant for screening things like oil tanks!
Like its close relative the cherry laurel, this species from Spain and Portugal is usually planted to make a large hedge, screen or windbreak. It is a very beautiful shrub in its own right though, eventually making a large shapely tree if allowed to grow naturally. The leaves are an attractive shade of green, reddish when young and on red stalks, while the white flowers in early summer smell sweetly of hawthorn. It is hardier and more versatile even than cherry laurel and withstands clipping into formal shapes.
The Royal Horticultural Society have given it their ward of Garden Merit (AGM).
This laurel will grow in all soils, it grows anything from 30-45 cm(1-1.5ft) per year, growing to 6m(20ft) if not pruned back. Reddish-purple shoots bear oval, glossy, dark green leaves. Slender spikes of small fragrant white flowers appear in early summer, followed by egg shaped non poisonous deep purple fruits.Makes an excellent hedge planted every 75cm(2.5ft) apart, cut back hard in spring to retain shape. Plant in a sunny or partial shaded position. Plant with a shrub compost and some bone meal to aid root development.
