Ilex Aguifolium x 10 Holly Hedging 20-30cm tall 9cm pot
Common holly is a versatile evergreen shrub with prickly, twisted, glossy dark green leaves that are instantly recognisable.
It is a useful slow growing evergreen variety which can be grown as a specimen tree or clipped bush with lovely bright red berries from late autumn to mid-winter.
Perfect for using as intruder-proof hedging for security and around boundaries. It has a dense growth habit and is not fussy about soil type, thriving in dense shade as well as full sun.
Hedges should be trimmed in spring and specimen shrubs in summer.
It can be cut back drastically if necessary without harming the plant.
The planting season is between November and late March while the plant is in dormant growth. Dig a reasonable hole and plant with either some rose, tree and shrub compost or any organic matter (but not fresh manure, well rotted is fine) and plant with some bone meal or fish, blood and bone as this will encourage quick root growth. Plant 4 per metre in a staggered row (in a double row 50cm apart and the rows 30cm apart) clipping the top leader on planting to encourage bushy growth.
Do not water once planted (unless the ground is very dry) so the plant will find it's own water (make it work for it's water, creating strong root growth).
Ilex once established will grow anything between 20cm-25cm per year.
These plants are supplied in a pack of 10 are 20-30cm tall and are pot grown.
