Carpinus Betulus | Hornbeam Tree
Often grown to make a classic tree avenue, instead of lime trees. This is a tree that copes well with heavy soils and retains its leaves slightly longer then beech. It is related to beech.
A medium-large bushy deciduous tree with grey fluted trunk and ovate, serrate, ribbed leaves turning yellow in autumn and then brown.
Plant in either full or partial sun, exposed or sheltered position of any aspect and any well drained moist soil.
Green catkins in late spring to autumn, followed by winged nuts.
Will tolerate heavy soil and can be used as hedging.
This tree is sold in a 12 litre container and is 150-200cm.
Especially suitable for planting in public spaces, they will be long lived, robust and have real presence when mature.
